PR Tips for Social Media Influencers
Traditional media is still the most credible news source. There, I said it. It may be controversial, but it’s true. What’s also true is that social media is an incredible tool for brand awareness, growth and sales. But the most successful PR strategies use a combination of media and platforms to amplify their message, so, just like I tell my Publicity 101 students, traditional media should be one part of your strategy.
If you’re a social media influencer wanting to engage traditional platforms, here are some tips to consider:
1. Become a contributor or guest blogger
Traditional media coverage creates credibility and everyone, even social media influencers, need credibility to build a brand and solidify their position among competitors. An easy way to do this is by guest submissions or guest blogging. Most online outlets are eager for fresh content, and with a little media savviness and a thoughtful, well-crafted pitch, it's often enough to get your foot in the door. This can also earn backlinks and significant site traffic.
2. Highlight your following
It doesn’t matter whether your following is big or niche, an impressive following is enticing to traditional media outlets who are always looking to attract new audiences. Although most media outlets cannot - and will not - ask you to promote their story, offer to tease/post an article or appearance on your social accounts. Reminding media about your popularity never hurts.
3. Generate leads by reaching new brands/new partnerships
More and more brands are getting on board with using influencers in their marketing campaigns, but they are always looking for new faces. Key decision makers still consume traditional media, so to increase your visibility, look at traditional media as a lead generator.
If you’re social media influencer, you’ve likely got the marketing down, but PR and influencer marketing are the most effective when used together. You will have the ability to establish a solid brand presence and ultimately bolster your business.
