How I used my PR Skills to Navigate an ASD Diagnosis

When my sweet Christos Arthur was diagnosed with autism, I went kind of numb. Even though the doctors had told us they were testing him, I didn’t really do much research. I wanted to be sure before I dipped my toe in that water. Fast forward to the day we got the results, Jim and I came home and sat in silence in the living room trying to figure out what that meant for Christos and for our family.

The Buried Life

One of my most favourite projects to work on was The Buried Life, an MTV show circa 2010. Although it was technically an MTV US series, we liked to claim it as our own because the talent - Dave, Duncan, Ben and Jonnie - was Canadian. The series was launching the second week of January. MTV was giving it a HUGE push and the guys were on one of the big NYE shows in Times Square. Everyone was bracing for it to be a hit.

Badass Ladies

When I started in PR, I was fresh faced, unjaded and willing to do a lot of grunt work to learn and move up the ladder. It turns out, I wasn’t alone. Little did I know that I would meet my best ally/friend/GF, Alison on my very first day of working in television. We quickly became inseparable and worked on a lot of company projects together, always volunteering, partnering and cheering for each other when we had big wins at work.

Olympic Glory

The Olympic Games and I have a solid history. In 2003, I was living in Vancouver working at The Fairmont Waterfront Hotel. Having just graduated from university, I wanted some time without school to try and work my way up to their PR department.

As we were getting close to the announcement of the Olympic host city, rumours were on our side. A few of us who had gotten involved (and invested) decided to go to the official announcement.

Seven PR Trends for 2022

1. PR must be culturally relevant. Every piece of PR content needs to tie into the current issues and ethos of culture. Being tone-deaf can be a brands’ kiss of death. While everyone makes mistakes - and I don’t believe in cancel culture - it is more important than ever before to think before you post/speak/advertise.

Dear Cervical Cancer, F&*K off

7 Highlights in 7 Years

ADPR has officially turned lucky number 7. It’s hard to believe but I’ve worked for myself almost as long as I worked for someone else. I didn’t think I’d EVER (note the caps) be an entrepreneur. I didn’t think I had the guts or the drive or the contacts, but it turns out, I did and I do. It’s one of my proudest accomplishments.

Small Business, Major Success

The single most important audience you will ever have is an internal one. At work, the internal audience are your team members and employees, investors and support staff. But if you look at it through the context of your non-work life, your internal stakeholders are your family, friends, neighbours, and children.

What Does Working in PR Entail?

Have you ever met someone who works in PR or publicity and have not known what that means? PR and communications job titles often sound impressive but let’s face it, no one grows up saying “I’m going to be a public relations professional, Mommy!” so it’s not a surprise that many people have no concept of what the job is.

The Two Essentials for Effective Communication

When I mention media training, I usually get an excited reaction or a nervous reaction. It can sound daunting. My golden rule s is to never tell someone what to say. My clients aren’t puppets. Everyone has a unique point of view that should be heard. My job is to help them deliver their message in the most effective way. Most people I work with actually need help on delivery and concise messaging, not on what to say.

PR in the Time of COVID

For small business owners and entrepreneurs, the pandemic has been excruciating. We don’t have to look far to see the struggles of hair salons, restaurants, events, and the travel industry, to name a few. And even though the real estate market seemed to remain strong, it still had to rigorously adapt how to view properties, meet clients, and close deals. Welcome to the new world order.
